Woher weißt du das? Meines Wissens hat das gar nichts mit den Device-Treibern zu tun, sondern mit dem Dateisystem. Dem Device ist es egal, wie groß es ist.

LVM würde auch nichts helfen, denn ein LVM-Volume kann man auch nur maximal so groß machen, wie Linux das Block-Device erkennt.
Das ist richtig, aber normalerweise ist das selbst bei eingehängtem / (root) möglich (also Blockdevice vergrößern). Mit LVM habe ich das definitiv schon gemacht, da war aber kein MBR-Layer dazwischen.

Stimmt, resize2fs vergrößert natürlich nur das Filesystem. Wir machen das immer so, weil wir auf Datenplatten keine Partitionen packen, sondern direkt das Block-Device mit ext4 formatieren. Die Partition muss natürlich noch mit fdisk oder parted vergrößert werden. Ich bin mir aber nicht sicher, ob das ohne ein Aushängen der Partition geht...

Ja geht, da werden nur neue Werte in die Partitionstabelle geschrieben, daher muss man die auch manchmal neu einlesen, weil Linux sowas im Normalfall einmal liest und dann im RAM speichert.

mittlerweile hab ich es geschafft, die Partition ebenfalls zu vergrößern. allerdings sagt resize2fs noch immer "nichts zu tun"
wie bring ich dem Resize2fs jetzt bei, festzustellen dass sdc1 nun größer ist?

Also wenn er noch nicht erkannt hat, dass die Partition größer ist, kannst du die Partitionstabelle beispielsweise so neu einlesen:

vergesst den Post - ich habs gefunden.
nun nochmal für eventuelle Nachahmer nach meinem Beispiel eine vollständige Anleitung: 1. Festplatte neu scannen echo 1 > /sys/class/scsi_device/[das_entsprechende_device]/device/rescan 2. Partition vergrößern fdisk /dev/sdc
p -> Anfang und Nummer der Partition merken
d -> Partition Löschen (ja - löschen; es gehen keine Daten verloren)
n -> neue Partition anlegen und darauf achten, dass die neue Partition die gleiche Partitionsnummer und den gleichen Anfang hat
w -> Änderungen speichern und fdisk schließen 3. Partition neu scannen
partprobe /dev/sdc 4. Dateisystem vergrößern
resize2fs /dev/sdc1
