zunächst vorab: falls ihr weitere Infos benötigt, bitte einfach kurz schreiben, welche Ausgabe ihr vom Terminal benötigt. Ich ergänze das dann. ☺
Ich habe bei mir im Rechner (Ubuntu 16.04, Intel® Core™ i5-4460 CPU @ 3.20GHz × 4, Grafik: Gallium 0.4 on AMD TAHITI (DRM 2.43.0, LLVM 3.8.0) –> Radeon HD 7950, 64Bit-System) die eben genannte Grafikkarte verbaut, die auch generell erkannt wird. Der Befehl

Dieses Ergebnis habe ich mit Ubuntu 16.04 und 14.04, was ich zwischenzeitlich testweise installiert habe. Da ich vor kurzem die Grafikkarte austauschen musste und zunächst dachte, dass der Fehler durch den Hardwaretausch kam, habe ich das System neu aufgesetzt. Das System ist somit auf aktuellem Stand; leider ohne Veränderung des Problems.
Ich habe schon verschiedene Sachen ausprobiert. Ich habe schon die fglrx-Treiber und die default-Treiber ausprobiert. Teils führte das beim fglrx-Treiber (unter 14.04 über "zusätzliche Treiber" installiert; unter 16.04 über das Terminal) nur dazu, dass ich Ubuntu gar nicht mehr grafisch starten konnte (Meldung: System is running in low graphic mode).
Hardinfo gibt Folgendes aus:

Ich hatte zwischenzeitlich irgendeinen Befehl ausgeführt, der die 3Gb der Grafikkarte richtig erkannt hat. Leider weiß ich nicht mehr, welcher Befehl das war.
Die Grafikkarte läuft in jedem Fall, da ich mehrere Monitore daran betreibe. Diese falschen Werte finden sich auch bei Virtualbox (unter den Anzeigeeinstellungen, wo man zuweist, wie viel Speicher Virtualbox abgreifen darf) und ggf. auch bei einer schlechteren Spieleperformance unter Dolphin, das vorher mit einer 1Gb-Karte flüssig lief.
