Hi, hat jemand Erfahrungen mit bcache?
Weil ich noch eine SSD über habe dachte ich mir, warum nicht damit mein NAS beschleunigen und hab mich mal zu dem Thema "SSD als Cache device" informiert.
Dabei bin ich auf das Thema LVM-Cache gekommen... Dann hatte ich mir mal ein paar Performancewerte zu dem Thema angesehen und demnach hat der LVM kaum irgendwelche messbaren Vorteile gebracht.
Daraufhin bin ich auf bcache gestoßen.. was wohl performanter als der LVM-Cache sein soll und wohl mit jedem Disk Device funktioniert. Jetzt konnte ich aber nicht wirklich eine aktive, weiterentwickelte Version von bcache finden... die einzige war irgendwie schon mehr als 4 Jahre alt...
und ein paar andere Versionen auf Github sehen eher als Community-Supported aus... gibt es von bcache keine, durch SUSE, RedHat oder oder, gewartete Version? Wie sind eure Erfahrungen mit bcache ggf. Dann gitb es wohl auch noch eine bcache-Variante von Facebook(https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Flashcache)... aber die wird auch nicht wirklich weiterentwickelt... Danke.

Das Thema "SSD als HDD Cache" ist durch die immer günstiger werdenden SSDs auch zunehmend kein Thema mehr, zumindest nicht für den typischen Home Anwender. Und Enterprise Storage Systeme können schon ewig mehrere Storage Ebenen Sauber abbilden. Aber: Bei einem NAS ist eh meist dein GBit/s LAN dein Problem, also Latenz und Bandbreite. Wäre mal witzig zu wissen was du da für Werte bekommst, bevor du an der falschen Stelle Zeit, Aufwand und Fehlerquellen in ein Problem steckst 😉 mfg Stefan

Naja es geht mir nicht wirklich um die NAS performance.
Ich habe nen KVM drauf laufen und irgendwie is die Plattenperformance für den KVM grottig, daher dachte ich an den SSD-Cache, damit die VM schneller ihre kleinen IO's los wird...
Die VM sieht Latenzen von 500ms bis 1000ms und mehr... und dann geht da auch nichts mehr... Die Performance hatte ich mal gemessen mit um die 100MB/s...
Die komplette VM aber auf die SSD ist aber auch widerrum Perlen vor die Säu...

500ms? Das ist selbst für eine billige Ökoplatte ein extrem schlechter Wert. Legst du die Platten schlafen und das passiert dann beim aufwachen? mfg Stefan

naja eine spezifische Einstellung zu sleep Werten habe ich nicht wirklich gesetzt... nachdem die VM auch dauerhaft läuft dürften die Platten eigentlich nicht in den Sleep-Modus fahren...
Wenn dem aber so wäre, müsste mindestens wenn die VM gestartet wird, die Platten irgendwann ja aktiv sein und die Latenzen müssten sinken, aber dem ist nicht wirklich so, auch nachdem ich mich noch an der VM angemeldet habe(Windows) sehe ich solche hohe Latenzen. Vielleicht zur Info noch, die VM-Platten liegen auf einem MD-Raid-5 mit 3 Platten, aber dennoch sollten besseren Latenzen zusammen kommen...

Bei sde/sdf sind die Error Counter sehr hoch, bei sdg hat man einen sehr hohen Load Cylce Count. Ein hoher Load Cycle bedeutet das die Platte versucht Strom zu sparen, wenn die erst hochfahren muss um was zu suchen/schreiben ist das Latenz. Die Error Counter bedeuten die Platte muss ggf. mehrfach den gleichen Sektor anfahren um die Daten lesen zu können. Um es kurz zu machen: Du wirst wohl paar Platten tauschen müssen, vorher sollte man sich anschauen was du da für RAID Setup hast. Was sagt denn cat /proc/mdstat zu der Sache? mfg Stefan PS: Backups hast du? 😉

Hey Hey, Danke dir für die Info.
Ja ein Backup habe ich kürzlich gemacht, wegen dem thema des Einsatzes von bcache. Wie kann ich vermeiden, dass die Platte in den Stromsparmodus geht...
Ich habe mal gegoogled aber erst mal nur Info's gefunden wie ich den Timeout-Wert für den Spin-Down höher setze... aber nicht deaktivieren...
Interessanterweise sind bei 2 Platten der Spin-Down deaktiviert... mdstat sieht OK aus "md10 : active raid5" es findet kein rebuild statt. Danke edit: habs gefunden wie ich den Spin-Down deaktiviere:
