Hallo, ich habe am Sonntag schnell mal eine Aktualisierung gestartet, wie ich das fast wöchentlich mache.
Dabei kamen irgendwelche Hinweise auf Fehler, die ich fatalerweise nicht beachtet habe. Ich habe den Deckel zugeklappt und habe den Ort gewechselt.
Dort konnte ich den Rechner dann nicht mehr bedienen. Nach viel Probieren kann ich den aktuellen Zustand so zusammenfassen: Das System bootet, braucht aber ewig lange. Es geht kein Touchpad und keine Maus. Mit Alt F2 kann ich ein Terminal starten. Der Versuch, eine Aktualisierung zu starten mit schlug fehl.
Der Grund: Es gibt nur noch ein Interface lo, kein wireless, kein eth0, keinen networkmanager kein ifup oder ifdown. Wie stelle ich es jetzt am besten an, dass die fehlenden Sachen wieder installiert werden, ohne dass Daten verloren gehen? Moderiert von rklm: Titel aussagekräftiger gemacht

Vielleicht ein fehlgeschlagenes Kernel-Update.
Kannst du den Vorgänger-Kernel starten (Vorgehensweise siehe Recovery-Modus (Abschnitt „Anzeige-Grub-Menue“)? Wenn ja, wie ist da das Verhalten? Vielleicht ist die /-Partition voll. df -h Zeige bitte auch lspci -nnk | grep -iE "wire|ether" -A3

Was da installiert / deinstalliert wurde, steht in /var/log/apt/history.log
Das Log endet am 7.2.2020, also am Freitag. Der Fehler trat am 9.2.2020 auf, am Sonntag. Dafür gibt es keine Einträge.
ls -l /boot bitte auch noch.

Es handelt sich um einen Dell Notebook 7390, zur Zeit an eine Dockingstation Dell WD15 über USB3.1 angeschlossen.
Die Ethernetschnittstelle befindet sich in der Dockingstation.
Vielleicht wird deshalb die Ethernetschnittstelle so nicht angezeigt.

Laut https://packages.ubuntu.com/eoan/linux-image-generic ist der aktuelle Eoan-Kernel linux-image-5.3.0-29-generic [amd64]. Bestätigt wird das durch https://usn.ubuntu.com/4253-1/. Wo kommt der 40er her? Daß du keinen Backup-Kernel hast, ist auch seltsam. Zeig mal bitte

Da du ja im installierten System keine Internetverbindung mehr hast, könntest du die Installation des aktuellen Kernels per Live-System und chroot-Methode versuchen. Wie man in die chroot-Umgebung kommt, steht in GRUB 2/Reparatur (Abschnitt „chroot-Methode“) Oder alternativ die aktuellen Pakete herunterladen und manuell installieren per dpkg -i *.deb https://packages.ubuntu.com/eoan/amd64/linux-image-generic/download https://packages.ubuntu.com/eoan/amd64/linux-image-5.3.0-29-generic/download https://packages.ubuntu.com/eoan/amd64/linux-modules-5.3.0-29-generic/download https://packages.ubuntu.com/eoan/amd64/linux-modules-extra-5.3.0-29-generic/download Nachtrag: Ein "Kurzabriss" der chroot-Methode inklusive eines wichtigen Punktes für die Internetverbindung findest du in https://forum.ubuntuusers.de/post/9114403. Dort fehlt allerdings das mounten der EFI-Partition vor dem Einhängen der Systemverzeichnisse. Bei dir wäre das dann sudo mount /dev/nvme0n1p1 /mnt/boot/efi

Deine Paketquellen (sources.list) sind etwas "abenteuerlich", zusätzlich sind noch jede Menge PPA's aktiviert. Du solltest meines Erachtens auf jeden Fall die proposed-Quellen deaktivieren (auskommentieren). Ich zitiere mal das Wiki (Systempflege (Abschnitt „Verzicht-auf-die-Paketquelle-proposed“)):
Zu einem stabilen, gepflegten System gehört auch ein sorgsamer Umgang mit den Software-Quellen. Die Vorabveröffentlichungen unter proposed sollten also unbedingt deaktiviert bleiben, denn Pakete aus den "proposed"-Quellen haben auf Produktiv-Systemen nichts zu suchen. Pakete aus proposed können fehlerhaft sein oder fehlerhafte Abhängigkeiten haben und somit das gesamte System oder die Paketverwaltung unbrauchbar machen!
Dir bleibt wohl wirklich nur, entweder die Kernel-deb's manuell zu installieren oder das Ganze per chroot von einem Live-System mit Internetzugang aus zu reparieren (Paketquellen bereinigen und neu einlesen, Kernel-Metapaket samt Kernel installieren). Das Suchen fachkundiger Hilfe vor Ort oder eine Neuinstallation kommen natürlich auch in Betracht.

Das Problem mit den Paketquellen ist mir schon klar. Das kommt daher, dass die Versionen der Programme, die ich ausprobieren will, in der Regel in den Paketquellen ziemlich alt sind.
Dann bleibt als Alternative ein PPA, wenn es das denn gibt, oder eben proposed. Für Snaps oder selber kompilieren konnte ich mich noch nicht erwärmen.
Dann gibts da noch so komische Sachen wie z.B. Shutter, das einzige wirklich brauchbare Screenshot-Programm, das aus den Paketquellen rausfliegt aus irgendwelchen Gründen. Dann braucht man halt wieder ein PPA
Ich habe jetzt den Kernel 5.3.029 installiert. Damit ging noch weniger. Mit Alt F2 war kein Eingabefenster zu sehen. Im Blindflug konnte zwar ein gnome-terminal gestartet werden, aber auch das war nicht zu sehen. Im Wiederherstellungsmodus war dann Netzwerk verfügbar und ich konnte defekte Pakete reparieren.
Nach Neustart waren dann auch wieder Netzwerk und Maus verfügbar beim Kernel 5.3.029.
Ich habe dann mal die Kommentare in den Paketquellen bereinigt 😀 Das Booten mit dem Kern 5.3.40 zeigt nach wie vor das gleiche Verhalten: Unbedienbar. Ich habe diesen Kernel jetzt wieder entfernt. Das war der größte Update Gau seit der Umstellung von /hda auf /sda vor vielen Jahren.
Ich war der Meinung, so etwas bekommt nur Microsoft hin. 😠 Trotz allem: Wieder etwas gelernt. Vielen Dank für die Hilfe!

Was soll der Vergleich mit Microsoft? Das Problem ist hausgemacht, du installierst dir Pakete aus den proposed-Quellen und wunderst dich, dass etwas nicht funktioniert!?

Ich habe es gerade gesehen.
Aber trotzdem: Solche Probleme hatte ich in den letzten 15 Jahren bei Ubuntu nur einmal. Es ist also nicht unbedingt zu erwarten. Im Gegensatz zu Ubuntu bin ich es bei Windows gewohnt, dass Updates sehr häufig schief gehen.

Schön, dass du soviel Wissen hast, alle Fehlermöglichkeiten im Voraus zu erkennen, und sie dann auch flugs im Handstreich zu lösen. Man kann sich vieles erarbeiten, es ist nur eine Frage der Zeit, die man aufwenden will und kann.
Ich kann natürlich 3-4 Wochen Vollzeit an dem Problem werkeln und es dann lösen.
Aber ich muss auch arbeiten und ich möchte schneller wieder einen benutzbaren Rechner haben.
Deshalb gibt es Foren, wo man Leute fragen kann, die das Wissen dazu bereits parat haben. Immerhin können andere aus den Artikeln auch Nutzen ziehen. Jetzt könnte man noch darüber diskutieren, warum Software aus den normalen Quellen Fehler hat und abstürzt, und der Fehler nur in der Version aus den proposed Quellen behoben ist.
Was tut man dann, wenn man das Programm dringend braucht? So passiert mit Josm.

Solche updates (die Probleme solcher Art fixen) weden von proposed recht zügig nach release(steht für Dein Release)-updates überführt. Ungetestete updates aus proposed können schon mal in's Auge gehen. Man kann Pakete aus proposed recht einfach identifizieren mit apt-show-versions | grep proposed man muß apt-show-versions erst installieren. Gruß Taomon
