Das Display hatte ich zuerst an VGA angeschlossen (Display hat ein eigenes Netzteil).
Danach die Maus per USB - dann kam es zu den Problemen. In umgekehrter Reihenfolge mit gleichen Problemen.

Ah .. scheint sich gerade erledigt zu haben.
Musste gerade neu starten weil ich es noch mal probiert hatte und mit angeschlossenen Geräten vom Boot an funktioniert es.
Hotplugging funktioniert in meinem Fall nicht - naja, lässt sich mit leben. Danke dir.
