Eine Frage noch: Kann es damit zusammenhängen, daß ich die 64-Bit version installiert habe? Ich hatte auch unter 12.04. die 64-Bit Version ohne Probleme, mein Prozessor hat das inoffiziell schon unterstützt...

Nachtrag: Ich habe Ubuntu Mate installiert und es hat reibungslos funktioniert. Merkwürdig, da die Checksum vom alten Downlad OK war.
