Wollte an Ostern auf einem Mini-Desktop-Rechner (Arlt Mr. Media Junior, gekauft 2014) Xubuntu (Version 16.04.4) installieren, aber weder das Live-System startete noch eine Installation war möglich (kam gar nicht ins entsprechende Auswahlmenü). Habe dann ein bisschen herumexperimentiert: a) Das Live-System von Debian 9 Stretch lief ebenfalls nicht, aber ich konnte zumindest das Betriebssystem installieren b) Ubuntu-Gnome (Version 16.04.4) verweigerte sowohl beim Live-System als auch bei der Installation seinen Dienst. Soweit ich das kapiert habe, gab es mit dem Netzwerk irgendwelche Probleme, vielleicht ein fehlender Treiber. Doch jetzt kommt's: Bei Xubuntu (Version 16.04.2) lief das Live-System ohne Probleme. Wurde zwischen den Versionen 16.04.2 und 16.04.4 etwas so gravierend verändert, dass sich negativ auf den Start der Live-CD auswirken kann? Für einen Tipp, woran es liegen könnte, wäre ich dankbar.

Ja, im Rahmen der LTS Enablement Stacks verwenden die beiden Point Releases mitunter unterschiedliche Versionen beim Kernel und XServer. Kannst du bitte mehr Informationen zu dem Gerät geben. Siehe ggf. auch Wiki-Artikel Systeminformationen ermitteln.

Hallo mrkramps, ich habe Dir nachfolgend mal ein paar Systeminfos aufgeführt. Da auf dem Rechner momentan wieder Win10 läuft, habe die Systeminfos mit einer Xubuntu Live-Version (16.04.2) ermittelt. Sorry, ich dachte, so wäre es übersichtlicher. Aber ich kann das Ganze natürlich auch ohne Leerzeilen liefern. Allerdings hatte ich ja geschrieben, dass auf dem Rechner momentan nur Win10 läuft, weshalb ich den Umweg über eine noch funktionierende Live-CD gehen muss, bei der ich den Code nicht direkt hier eingeben kann. xubuntu@xubuntu:~$ lspci

Dank mir nicht voreilig. Auf den ersten Blick sehe ich nichts, was an dieser Hardware Ursache für das Problem sein könnte. Der WLAN-Chipsatz wird voraussichtlich Schwierigkeiten machen, aber das eher ein anderes Thema. Ich kann mal etwas im Trüben fischen … Voraussetzung ist auf jeden Fall ein Ubuntu für 64-Bit-Architektur, damit das EFI Bootmanagement funktioniert. Im UEFI selber könnte man ggf. „Secure Boot“ und „Fast Boot“ deaktivieren und schauen, ob es bekannte Probleme mit Gigabyte-Mainboards gibt, die ggf. irgendwelche zusätzlichen Einstellungen für eine Linux-Installation benötigen. Ansonsten ein Live-System mit geänderten Bootoptionen starten - „quiet “ streichen, „nosplash noplymouth “ ergänzen. Dann kriegt man ggf. eine aussagekräftige Fehlermeldung beim Systemstart gelistet. Was die genaue Ubuntu-Version betrifft, ist das im Moment etwas schwierig, weil die neue LTS-Version vor der Tür steht und Xubuntu für 16.04 eh nur 3 Jahre Unterstützung bereitstellt. Man könnte jetzt direkt Xubuntu Daily für 18.04 testen (was sich später automatisch bis zur Final aktualisiert) und versuchen das zum Laufen zu kriegen. Oder man versucht es mit 16.04.4, bei dem man aber mit der Veröffentlichung von 18.04 den HWE Stack auf 16.04.5 aktualisieren muss (also gleicher Kernel und XServer wie 18.04) und trotzdem nur bis 2019 Unterstützung hat. Oder halt 16.04.1 mit dem ursprünglichen LTS-Kernel und -XServer ohne HWE Stack, was wiederum nur bis 2019 unterstützt wird. Diese Entscheidung liegt bei dir. Was Wibuntu übrigens mit einem Codeblock statt Absätzen meint, ist dieses schicke, graue, scrollbare Textfeld, das er in seinem Beitrag präsentiert und das wahnsinnig hilfreich ist um Befehle, Quelltext und Textausgaben hier im Forum lesbar zu veröffentlichen - siehe auch Forensyntax 😉

Ich bin ein bisschen weitergekommen: Ganz am Anfang bekomme ich nämlich eine Fehlermeldung, deren Bedeutung ich offenbar verkannt habe:
[Firmware Bug]: TSC_DEADLINE disabled due to Errata; please update microcode to version: 0x20 (or later) Das führt dazu, dass Linux-User (es ist nicht bloß Ubuntu betroffen) ihr System nicht mehr starten bzw. (wie bei mir) nicht von der Live-CD booten können. Bei einem laufenden System soll angeblich der Befehl "sudo apt-get install intel-microcode" helfen, aber dazu hat man vor dem Start der Live-CD gar keine Möglichkeit. Soweit ich es verstanden habe, läuft das noch als ungelöster Bug. Irgendwie müsste das Microcode-Update in den iso-Dateien schon von Anfang an enthalten sein. Komischerweise hat Debian zwar das Ausprobieren verweigert, ließ aber immerhin die Installation zu, die haben also offenbar eine Teillösung gefunden. Xubuntu 18.04 LTS Beta 1 habe ich ausprobiert, aber damit klappt es ebenfalls nicht. Mein Bios selbst zu updaten ist mir zu heikel. Windows hat bei der Installation keine Zicken gemacht und läuft, da will ich nichts riskieren. Schade, dass mir - zumindest vorerst - Xubuntu auf diesem Rechner verwehrt ist.

Im Debian-Wiki zu Microcode wird die Bootoption dis_ucode_ldr angeführt, die das Laden von Microcode unterbindet. Wenn das funktioniert, käme man immerhin bis zur Installation.

Danke für den Tipp, aber das ist mir ehrlich gesagt zu komplex. In der Readme-Datei steht zu Recht: "You have been warned. Do not do this unless you really know what you are doing." So richtig klar ist mir das nämlich nicht. Und vor allem die Auswirkungen, wenn ich das System installiert habe. Wegen der kleinen Platte ist kein Dual-Boot möglich, es heißt also entweder Win10 oder Xubuntu. Aber die Arbeit, Windows erneut zu installieren, falls Xubuntu dann doch nicht funktioniert, ist mir zu aufwendig. Nicht noch einmal all die Updates und Einstellungen... Da bleibe ich auf diesem Rechner lieber bei Windows, schließlich habe ich ja noch ein Notebook, auf dem Xubuntu ohne Probleme läuft. Ganz umstellen wäre zwar schön gewesen, aber es hat wohl nicht sollen sein. Vielleicht ist der Bug in einer der kommenden Versionen beseitigt. Nochmal danke für die Unterstützung.

Dafür nicht. Du kannst Ende des Monats die finale Version von 18.04 testen. Man sollte eigentlich davon ausgehen können, dass die das Installationsmedium für die neue Version nicht mit diesem Fehler oder zumindest nicht ohne verlässlichen Workaround veröffentlichen.

Dass die Entwickler diesen Fehler bereinigen, hoffe ich auch. Ich habe übrigens heute, rein interessehalber, auf einem älteren Sony-Notebook (ca. 2011 gekauft) Xubuntu 16.04.4 von der Live-CD zu installieren versucht: Das gleiche Ergebnis, keine Installation möglich. Offenbar tritt der Fehler nicht so selten auf, wie ich geglaubt habe. Falls tatsächlich, hätte Linux echt ein Problem. Zumindest weniger versierte User (so wie ich einer bin) müssten dann zwangsläufig auf Linux verzichten, weil sie einfach überfordert wären. Auf manuelle Bios-Updates (falls überhaupt verfügbar und von den damit verbundenen Risiken ganz zu schweigen) werden die meisten wohl verzichten. Schade, wo doch der Linux-Desktop in den letzten Jahren echt Fortschritte gemacht hat und eine Chance verdient hätte. Gerade in Zeiten, in denen man sich bei Windows ständig ausgeforscht fühlt.

Der Haken scheint wohl zu sein, dass bei den meisten betroffen Geräten nicht zwangsläufig der Startvorgang abgerochen wird. Deswegen wird das vielen gar nicht aufgefallen sein. Auf Linux rumzuhacken ist hier übrigens nicht zielführend. Diesen Abfuck mit dem Microcode haben wir, weil Intel (und in gewissem Maße auch AMD) ihre Prozessorarchitektur verkackt hat - Meltdown und Spectre. Die Kernel-Entwickler versuchen gerade irgendwas richtig zu machen. Ich darf daran erinnern, dass bspw. durch die ersten Maßnahmen von Microsoft auch das ein oder andere Windows-System auf der Strecke geblieben ist. Ohne diesen Microcode und optionale BIOS/UEFI-Updates könnten wir so ziemlich alle Geräte mit Intel-Prozessoren (und voraussichtlich auch alle AMD-Prozessoren) dem Elektroschrott übergeben unabhängig vom Betriebssystem. In diesem Kontext ist so ein kleiner Bug im Kernel nur eine Randnotiz.

Wenn Du das als "auf Linux herumhacken" interpretiert hast, habe ich mich wohl falsch ausgedrückt. Ganz im Gegenteil, ich habe Linux ja ausdrücklich gelobt (als Alternative zur vermuteten Ausforschung bei Windows, Fortschritte beim Desktop). Und mir ist natürlich klar, wer die fatalen Fehler in den Chips verursacht hat. Sicherlich hast Du auch recht damit, dass das Installations-Problem tatsächlich im Vergleich dazu klein ist. Nur kommt es gerade jetzt, wo man potenziell einige von Windows herüberziehen könnte, zur Unzeit. Aber natürlich hoffe ich, dass das Problem rasch beseitigt wird. Schließlich will man anderen zeigen: Einfach DVD einlegen, ruckzuck installieren - funktioniert doch!

Problem offenbar seit der gestrigen Veröffentlichung gelöst. Installationsmedien von Ubuntu und Xubuntu 18.04 starten wie gewohnt und bleiben nicht mehr nach kurzer Zeit hängen. Installation habe ich zwar nicht angeschoben, doch das Live-System war benutzbar. Momentan läuft auf allen Rechnern Xubuntu 16.04.4. Dort, wo die Installation von 16.04.4 ursprünglich nicht möglich war, habe ich zunächst 16.04.2 installiert und mich per Update auf 16.04.4 hochbewegt. Hat geklappt. Wechsel auf 18.04. werde ich allerdings erst dann machen, wenn er offiziell mithilfe der Aktualisierung angeboten wird, also im Sommer bei Vorliegen des ersten Point-Release. Windows vermisse ich momentan jedenfalls nicht.
